Photo Gallery: Claire Martin’s Downtown East Side

Share:

It makes sense that Claire Martin began her career in social work before shifting to photography. The native Australian has been documenting marginalized communities in otherwise prosperous nations since 2007, and has won numerous awards for her reporting efforts. She took the photos after the jump in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side, a neighbor full of poverty, drug addictions, and AIDS (with an estimated 30 percent of the population infected). The problems persist despite Vancouver having been voted named the Economist’s Most Livable City for the last two years. Click through to take the strange, sad tour.
