1. Dan Deacon – “Padding Ghost” This tune, from Dan Deacon’s brand newest, Bromst, has the same 8-bit, glitchy feel of his last full-length, Spiderman of the Rings, but mashed into a bumping, 180-bpm dance groove. Neko Case – “This Tornado Loves You” With light banjo, cooing back-up vocals, and brushed country drums, this Middle Cyclone cut picks up where Case left off with 2006’s break-out, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. DD/MM/YYYY – “Digital Haircut” This Toronto septet’s shows the rare quality of taking wide experimental leaps into art rock without dropping into an ether void of beat and melody. Ward – “Never Had Nobody Like You” With kid-friendly lines like “It’s just like, A-B-C, like 1-2-3,” this song from Ward’s new Hold Time doesn’t need She & Him partner and pretty face Zooey Deschanel to sound utterly sweet. [Download MP3] via The Yellow Stereo 6. Morrissey – “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris” Sure, fans would line up to watch the former Smiths’ front-man shovel coal, but we still rejoiced when they heard this majestic ode, an epic at a mere 2:30. Appleseed Cast – “Raise the Sails” After jumping ship into stormy waters of delay and reverb, the last three minutes of this tune, from the post-rock poster-band’s new Sagarmatha, is a hopeful, acoustic-guitar driven effort to right the ship. CurT@!n$ – “Black Folks” This song from CurT@!n$, the only hip-hop act who spells his name in leet speak, challenges Al Sharpton, Oprah, and Bill Cosby’s negative view of rap with slick rhymes supported by historical sound clips. [Download MP3] 9. Iran – “Buddy” With TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe at the helm, this tune from Iran’s new Dissolver album is one of most peaceful pop songs ever to be backed entirely by a two-note droning, distorted, guitar line. [Download MP3] via Thanks Captain Obvious 10. Trail of Dead – “Isis Unveiled” The recent release of Century of Self brings Trail of Dead’s sound back to the raw, hands-off, creative rock of their 1998 self-titled debut.
