Dr. Kai-hung Fung tied for first place in the 2007 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge with this image of a sinus cavity that he made by stacking nearly 200 CT slices of a patient that he had examined for thyroid disease. It reminds us of one of Salvador Dali’s hidden-image paintings — or maybe one of Georgia O’Keefe’s crazy flowers — but definitely not an upshot of somebody’s nose. Check out more “psychedelic” science images in a slideshow at Discover Magazine.
