Daily Dose Pick: Art House Co-Op

3

Through its online home, Brooklyn-based organization Art House Co-op produces ambitious international art projects that anyone can participate in.

The group’s most popular undertaking is The Sketchbook Project, a traveling library of artists’ sketchbooks. Over 10,000 books from 104 countries will begin touring the US this month, with stops in New York, Austin, Chicago, and San Francisco. A Million Little Pictures, the cooperative’s roving photography exhibition, is currently open for participation.

Shane Zucker and Steven Peterman founded Art House in Atlanta in 2006. The pair’s original goal was to organize local art shows, but after a few months, the focus went global. In addition to interacting with over 30,000 artists, the team recently opened a storefront reading room in Williamsburg, Brooklyn called the Brooklyn Art Library. This space will eventually serve as an archive, as well as nurture the local arts community.

One of Art House’s first concepts, A Million Little Pictures involves participants shooting a complete roll of film on a single theme. Anyone interested can sign up online and receive a single-use camera through the mail. After developing the film, contributors send the prints back to Art House for incorporation into its awe-inspiring photography roadshow. The deadline for participation is March 31.

Explore Art House’s website to find out more, follow the group on Tumblr, become a fan of Art House and The Sketchbook Project on Facebook, and if you’re in the New York area, stop into the Brooklyn Art Library.
