Video of the Day: Talking to Strangers on the NYC Subway

The average New Yorker’s subway commute is probably the most quiet part of his or her day. Despite the fact that over one million people involved, few, if any of us, actually talk to one another — and when we do, it’s not always the most friendly of exchanges. This idea inspired emerging filmmaker Luke Rudkowski to pick up his camera and approach commuters at random with basic questions. A simple premise to be sure, but in most cases the responses were oddly fascinating — or maybe it just feels more poignant because it’s set to “Comptine d’un autre été: L’après-midi” from the Amelie soundtrack.
