Those of you who were disappointed by Lady Gaga’s low-budget “Edge of Glory” video will be pleased to see she’s back to her old, over-the-top tricks in “Yoü and I.” Between the weird ice-cream truck, the agrarian setting, the veils, and the prosthetics and other medical paraphernalia, the video has us thinking of the ’90s — specifically, it has a Marilyn Manson-meets-John Cougar Mellencamp-meets-Smashing Pumpkins’ “Today” vibe. Her bloody, dirty feet in sky-high spike heels, meanwhile, puts us in mind of Marilyn Minter. And then there are the cameos by Gaga’s alter egos, drag-king Jo Calderone and Yuyi the Mermaid. The song is so vanilla it could have been a Taylor Swift single, so the torture bits don’t exactly complement the music — but then, is there anything more Gaga than singing a saccharine pop tune while strapped down, with some metal and wires glued to your face? Watch “Yoü and I” and tell us what you think after the jump.
