Celebrated for his transgressive camp cinema, John Waters has saturated his recent artworks with enough film-themed irony to leave them dripping, just like the slab of ham in his juicy C-print photograph. HAM! Like a bad actor! Tee-hee-hee. His upcoming show Rear Projection at the Arthur Roger Gallery in New Orleans chortles pointedly with digitally altered Hollywood smiles, “little movies” comprised of sequential photographs of TV screens and oversized meta-textual props. Giant “decorative” roach trap anyone? Spinning off the notion of outdated “rear projection” movie effects, whereby action is filmed against a projected, separately shot background, it looks like a worthy, fun show. Rear Projection runs at the Arthur Roger Gallery from October 1st through the 29th. Waters will leading a walk-through of the exhibition on October 1st at 1pm, with an opening reception later that evening.
