The 30 Greatest ‘Paris Review’ Covers Ever

We’re totally loving this fall’s cover of The Paris Review, and the newest cool design got us to thinking about some of our favorites from years past. The literary quarterly, founded in 1953 by Harold L. Humes, Peter Matthiessen and George Plimpton, has had many different designs grace its face — from the beautiful to the silly, from the abstract to the realistically rendered. With a publication like The Paris Review, of course it’s what inside that counts the most, but that doesn’t stop us from appreciating the packaging. Click through to see our 30 favorite Paris Review covers since their first printing, and let us know if we’ve missed any of your beloved picks in the comments.

I'm astonished and delighted you picked for inclusion MY favorite cover of all time, issue #81. Excellent.

My comment is Paris The cradle of culture The pictures are weird As if you return To your coming to this world And try to cope With all that is around

So glad you like the new cover -- and the old ones too. I can't help piping up for my own favorite: Larry Rivers's design for issue 27, which uses the Gauloise and Lucky Strike logos to suggest the trans-Atlantic identity of the Paris Review: http://www.theparisreview.org/back-issues/27 This was the only cover ever commissioned by the poet Frederick Seidel, then our Paris editor, now an advisory editor and a frequent contributor to the mag.

I love the Paris Review. This is a nice selection of covers!
