As card-carrying superfans, it is our responsibility to watch every available video clip of David Bowie — especially the ones from the ’70s. So imagine our delight at learning that a lost 1973 clip of Bowie on Top of the Pops, which aired last night on the BBC’s Top of the Pops Christmas Special, has already made its way online. It’s a fantastic performance of “Jean Genie,” featuring all the wonderful costumes, fish-eye shots, and awkward, dancing British teenagers you might expect from such a clip. Watch it after the jump, and direct your gratitude to John Henshall, a cameraman who worked on the show and kept a personal copy of the footage — which is more than we can say for the BBC, who simply taped over their only recording of it. Just to clarify, they didn’t just “tape over” (they wiped and reused the tapes) THIS episode, they did it to most of them and most other tv as well.
