My favorite bookstore of all time is on this list: Baldwin's Book Barn, in West Chester, PA, near my hometown of Kennett Square. My mom used to take us there when we were children and I could never get enough of it. Last year I had a chance to go visit it again and bought a used copy of one of my childhood favorite books, A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle.  I haven't lived in Pennsylvania in over 40 years, but Baldwin's will always hold a special place in my heart.

Let's all have a moment of silence for (in my opinion) the most beautiful bookstore around. David Mirvish Books in Toronto had to shut down due to lack of interest in art books, but this store was amazing. Complete with a 50ft Frank Stella to lord over all the beautiful books. http://www.blogto.com/bookstores/davidmirvish

I loved this list, and the first one. The Housing Works Bookstore Cafe in New York is such a lovely, convivial place that it's even available to rent for events. I dream of getting married there one day! Also, the money you spend on books goes towards a very worthy cause. http://www.housingworks.org/locations/detail/bookstore-cafe

Where is the Midtown Scholar in Harrisburg, PA?

My favourites are Baldwin's Book Barn - very congenial and love the cat and the desk, Massolit Books - looks mysterious, Munro Books - splendid ceiling and very light, and Tattered Cover - because who could resist a bookstore with a name like that. These fabulous bookstores make me think of the quote by Van Gogh, 'So often, a visit to a bookshop has cheered me and reminded me that there are good things in the world.' Hereward Corbett, who runs 'The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop'in Tetbury and Nailsworth has this quote on the shops bookmarks.

And what about ROBINSON CRUSOE in Istanbul????????

That last bookstore looked like the torture chamber from the movie Hostel.

Martinus.sk, Bratislava is my favorite bookstore in the world!

There are just so many amazing book stores, I love it. My town in Australia now has no bookstores left, these kind of posts give me hope for the reading world. There is one store that I'd like to mention Dymocks, George Street Sydney is beautiful, and has been there for many years. I'd love to see how the 'Honesty Bookshop' in the UK works, it looks quite interesting. I also love the look of Baldwin’s Book Barn.

Shout out to Birchbark Books in Minneapolis!

I look at these pictures of these beautiful places, where people interact with other people to buy tangible books, and it makes me look at people reading on Kindles and think 'assholes'.

Beautiful but you are missing a few that are amazing such as Livraria Lello & Irmao in Porto (Portugal) http://www.flickr.com/photos/carlinhos75/2941884693/ Boekhandel in Maastricht (Holand) http://www.nomaders.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/maastricht.jpg or El Ateneo in Buenos Aires http://www.nomaders.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/libreria-buenos-aires.jpg

The places are all lovely! I wish I could visit them all someday! :)

The photos don't do justice to Baldwin's Book Barn-- the staircases, cubbyholes, and serendipity, as well as the fine old bank barn itself. It's west of Philadelphia, outside a small university town, in the painter Wyeth's countryside.

i wish i worked at one of these bookstores.
