The 20 Most Extraordinary Hotel Rooms in the World

[Editor's note: In celebration of the holidays, we're counting down the top 12 Flavorwire features of 2012. This post, at #5, was originally published February 29.] As much as we love virtual globetrotting, we live for real world travel adventures. If you’re like us and spend weeks obsessively planning every last detail of your trip to ensure that your not-often-enough vacation is maximized to the hilt, consider this our gift to you. We’ve scoured every inch of the great world wide web to create a guide to designed sleeping experiences that are anything but ordinary.

The English writer G.K. Chesterton, notably George Bernard Shaw’s frenemy, said “there are no rules of architecture for a castle in the clouds.” From the surrealist creation of our favorite discreet Belgian fashion designer to pillows made of chocolate and ice to a toon shaded room by a German comic book artist that will make you feel like you stepped into the world of Jessica Rabbit, click through to see what strange and wonderful places await the next time you’re trying to maximize your unconscious dreamstate. We want to try them all, but let us know in the comments which one you’re dying to stay in!

Amazing hotel room

These are cool! I'd love to spend a few nights in Nautilus. By the way, there's also a snow castle hotel rooms in Finland. A bit like that one in Canada.

The Poseidon Undersea Resort at Poseidon Mystery Island, Fiji. A mystery indeed folks, and a big joke. This megalomanic resort does NOT exist and will very likely never exist.

I proposed to my fiancee at Giraffe manor. Stunning place.

Nice article. Let me add the Zauberlehrling in Stuttgart, with 10-15 very differently themed rooms. Nice.

#9 is just one of many at a great and wacky hotel. the whole madonna inn is a trip. :)

Don't forget the Dalat Crazy House in Vietnam (Hang Nga Guesthouse). It's Gaudi on acid.

Missing the Exchange Hotel in Amsterdam. ''A hotel project by the next generation of Dutch fashion designers'' Conde Nast Traveller UK

That's not what schizophrenic means.

I've stayed at Giraffe Manor before, it was an amazing experience! The hosts were so nice, the food and my room were amazing, and obviously the best part was all the giraffes!

Not real! Check the Luxatic link. Photo of the restaurant - They've actually stolen photos from Conrad Maldives. http://www.maldivesonlineguide.com/wp-content/gallery/conrad-maldives/conrad%20maldives%20%288%29.JPG

The James Bond Room is definitely my favourite! Oh to be a Bond girl for one night . . .

Wow!! I also want to stay there! The room provides a once in a lifetime experience

Definitely, the Cave Man Room haha

The underwater hotel. I want to see the beauty under the sea while wearing pajamas. Not a fan of scuba diving suits.lol

I could not choose between the Glass Igloo and Casa Triangular if you had a gun to my head. Magic! Room 121 at Hotel Fox and The Karen Blixen Suite at Giraffe Manor are close seconds. The Nautilus Suite and The Mine Suite, while indeed extraordinary, would make me feel I was suffocating! Great finds! Also see the Post Ranch Inn houses in Big Sur (http://www.postranchinn.com/) and the Treehouse Hotel treehouses in Swedish Lapland (http://www.treehotel.se) Both on my bucket list!

That Lagerfeld is disturbing. I would hope that chocolate figure isn't anatomically correct. Although i suppose some may.

Would love to have an underwater adventure (with my own submarine) in The Nautilus Suite at the Poseidon Undersea Resort – Poseidon Mystery Island, Fiji. AWESOME!

The big lips of Paris!
