Singapore-based photographer Aw Zinkie — who we first learned about on Fubiz — explores the waste management problems of her home country by snapping shots of people with their trash in their own environments. Aw describes her documentation of the items as an “identity autopsy” — hence her portraits that replace people’s faces with their own garbage. The series connects to environmental concerns in the Southeast Asian island city-state, which only has one landfill on the offshore island of Pulau Semakau (where the artist snags her title from). With land scarce and a growing population, Aw’s work forces viewers to consider their own output in a disposable world. Click through for a closer look.
