A Good Man is Hard to Find,” Flannery O’Connor

Few short stories have stuck with us as much as this one, which is probably O’Connor’s most famous work — and with good reason. The Misfit is one of the most alarming serial killers we’ve ever met, all the more so for his politeness, and the story’s moral is so striking and terrifying that — whether you subscribe to the religious undertones or not — a reader is likely to finish and begin to reexamine their entire existence. Or at least we did, the first time we read it.

I like what I am reading.

The fantastic "In The Cemetery Where Al Johnson's Buried" by Amy Hempel definitely deserves a mention. http://www.fictionaut.com/stories/amy-hempel/in-the-cemetery-where-al-jolson-is-buried

lovely collection. Even though not everyone may agree with the choices, the shorts themselves are food for thought and perfect for tedious trips on the subway.

I would add one of many wonderful short stories by William Saroyan starting with "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze."

...ahh, another great Flavourpill post! Thank you ... (while not yet classics yet, perhaps, but Aimee Bender and Lorrie Moore are other essential writers of this genre)

Collette's "Bella Vista" is one of her many, many great short stories. And while a bit cliched at this point, O.Henry's "The Gift of the Magi" is quite the masterpiece, no?

I'm unable to find a link, but "A Priest in the Family" by Colm Toibin.

Thank you so much for this! Annie Proulx's The Half-Skinned Steer is available online, as well: http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1997/11/the-half-skinned-steer/6168/ Also, Shullamuth, there's way too much stuff online to possibly include every short story masterwork. Why not share instead of scoffing?

How can you not have anything from Joyce's Dubliners on this list?

Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, by Joyce Carol Oates: http://www.usfca.edu/jco/whereareyougoing/
