Video Essay: “And Introducing… Famous Faces in Their Film Debuts”

This week’s must-see DVD for film fans is Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, Alex Stapleton’s wickedly enjoyable documentary profile of Roger Corman, the B-movie master whose exploitation movies launched half the moviemakers and movie stars of the ’70s. One of the film’s highlights is Jack Nicholson’s remembrances of his first movie roles, including his debut performance in The Little Shop of Horrors (which Corman shot in all of two days). Nicholson’s story got us thinking about other stars and their first movie roles, so we put together this quick video essay with a peek at some other famous film debuts. Check out our latest video essay after the jump.

I had to look at the Krasinski one a couple of times--Hoffman is that magnetic, apparently.

@ProfundoNerdo- Sorry I didn't see your post before I entered mine.

Jack Nicholson's first film was "The Crybaby Killer" from 1958.

Curious that they don't call out Julia Roberts in the Mystic Pizza clip (she's wearing a black dress in the same dinner scene Matt Damon appears in). That was her first movie also!

Lots of fun, thanks. This would be fun to add to. 48H may have been Eddie Murphy's first film, but he was very well known from SNL at that point. And the movie helps to propel him to fame, since it was a vehicle for him, so not quite the right category imho. Kind of the same thing with Whoopi Goldberg in Color Purple. Also, Julia Roberts was relatively unknown in Mystic Pizza as well, she had done Satisfaction already the same year, which was a Justine Bateman vehicle, but was not the star of either of those films. A nearly unrecognizable Ben Affleck also had a role in Dazed and Confused btw. And Outsiders also featured among the first appearances of Patrick Swayze and Tom Cruise (he'd been in Taps and Endless Love already). Harrison Ford had an early appearance in Lucas' American Grafitti.

Jack Nicholson's debut performance was in Roger Corman's "Cry Baby Killer." "Little Shop of Horrors" was his third film.

@frenticgrl- That's why I put John Krasinski's name on the screen during that clip. Nice idea, but look at the frame before complaining.

@frenticgrl - They were pointing out that was John Krasinski's debut not Philip Seymour Hoffman's.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's film debut was WELL before "State and Main". At least by 8 years. Nice idea, but check IMDB before compiling.

kevin costner's first major film role was as the corpse in the big chill (1983). there are no scenes where they show his face; apparently there were flashback scenes w/ him but they were cut.
