Video of the Day: If Facebook Were Invented in the ’90s

For better or for worse, Facebook will go down in history as one of the defining inventions of the aughts. But what if it had been created in the ’90s instead? Squirrel Monkey explores that alternate timeline in a hilarious video tutorial that will take you back to the days of Windows 3.1 and Netscape Navigator. Alf, Golden Girls, eye-assaulting mid-’90s computer color schemes, and the perennially confusing (even in 2012!) act of “liking” something that is actually tragic all make appearances. It all serves to remind us that, when taken out of its apparently essential contemporary context, social media can seem pretty ridiculous. Watch the clip after the jump, then visit Squirrel Monkey to learn about Twitter and Google in the ’80s, and what Draw Something would look like as an ancient PC game.
