10 Terrible Movie Moms and the Rotten Things They Said

If movies have taught us anything, it’s that cinema isn’t exempt from bad parenting. Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and there are a few film moms who definitely won’t be getting a card from us this year. Some of these bad mommies have traded their maternal instinct for a killing instinct and others are an absolute Freudian nightmare. Judging by the terrible things these nasty moms have said to their families, everyone on our list below could use a little parenting 101. See what rotten stuff these twisted mamas have been spouting, and leave your favorite quotes in the comments section.

Margaret White in Carrie
The zinger: “They’re all gonna laugh at you.”

High school is tough enough, but Carrie’s strict, fundamentalist mother makes the experience a thousand times worse for the awkwardly shy teenager. The horrors of menstruation are taxing on poor Carrie, but her nutty mom adds to the teen’s anxiety by telling her stuff like, “Pimples are the Lord’s way of chastising you,” and, “I can see your dirty pillows.” Clearly Margaret White missed the memo that all little girls grow up. As if all this weren’t bad enough, Mrs. White haunts her daughter with just one sentence: “They’re all gonna laugh at you.” It’s every adolescent’s worst nightmare, and the words make Carrie go full-blown bonkers at the prom.

@Lalee: ...and Louise Fletcher is just more fun to watch in general.

One of my favorites comes from a good movie mom, but it's worth mentioning. Evelyn Wright (Cloris Leachman) in Spanglish: "Lately your self hatred is just good common sense."

I just watched Nobody Knows and that mom is pretty terrible. Hilariously enough, my mom is the one that recommended I watch it!

From Willow: "Traitor child, I must despise you now."

I have to give it to Anne Ramsey in Throw Mama from the Train. "Who are you?" "I'm Owen's friend." "Owen doesn't have a friend." Note, she doesn't say "friends" or "any friends." She says "a friend" which is so specifically brutal.

I vote for Lana Turner in IMITATION OF LIFE. Zinger: "Darling, I didn't realize you had friends?"

I believe you meant Jungian, not Freudian.

I see I should have read the other comments before posting, but it appears there are a few who agree that one evil mother is missing.

what about the Manchurian Candidate with Angela Lansbury?

How about the bad guy ex husband's mom in "Kindergarten Cop"? Don't remember the actresses name, but she was pretty chock full o' evil....

Really missed the mark without having Angela Lansbury in the original 1962 Manchurian Candidate. Manipulating her son to become an assassin?

The movie An American Crime with Katherine Keener and Ellen Page is a true story and includes the worst mother of all time, although technically she isn't the biological mother for Ellen Page's character.

The worst for me was Mary Tyler Moore's character in Ordinary People. I don't think that I've ever cried that hard while watching a movie.

I'm with Chazz. How could you leave out Angela Lansbury in the original "The Manchurian Candidate?"

Okay, now when we will see a similar list for shitty dads?

Hey!!!! What about "The Manchurian Candidate"?............... Mrs. Iselin: "I keep telling you not to think! You're very, very good at a great many things, but thinking, hon', just simply isn't one of them."

I always thought Betty Davis' Mrs. Taggart in 'The Anniversary' was pretty evil; a sweetly smiling, manipulative, poisonous harridan.

The Angela Lansbury's portrayal of an evil mom in The Manchurian Candidate (original version), is a favorite for me.

Ditto to Sybil. That movie haunted me. Worst Person Who Gave Birth of all time? Not fit to be called a mother.

The mom from White Oleander was pretty terrible, especially when she convinces Renee Zellweiger that suicide is the way to go.

"I can see your dirty pillows" is the greatest line of dialogue ever spoken.

I'd say that the mom in Flowers in the Attic was probably worse than the grandmother. She wasn't as quotable though.
