Neil Patrick Harris Is Officially Hosting the Emmys

Yes, we speculated before, but now it’s official: After doing such a fantastic job with this year’s Tonys, Neil Patrick Harris — instead of five reality TV show hosts — will helm the Primetime Emmy Awards on CBS on September 20th. Suffice it to say we can expect a lot of singing. [Insert Doogie Howser, M.D. joke about being called in to resuscitate the show here.]

From the official press release:

“After having had such a hoot hosting the Tonys, I was thrilled to get the call about the Primetime Emmys. I’m looking forward to the challenge of the show — adding my own voice to it, while honoring the nominees and the entire year in television. But which voice to choose? I’m torn between gangsta, foppish Brit, and robot. Really proud of my robot. We’ll see what happens on the night.”

As Entertainment Weekly notes, the new season of How I Met Your Mother premieres the night after the award’s show. Well played, CBS.
