TV’s Most Versatile Actresses

As Season 1 of HBO’s Veep nears its all-too-soon finish (don’t worry folks, a second season is on its way), we gotta say it’s been nice to have Julia Louis-Dreyfus back on the small screen — although “back” might not be the proper word choice here. The woman has had no real gap in her resume since she became a cast member on Saturday Night Live at the tender age of 21, making her part of a talented class of television actresses with the incredible ability to reinvent themselves time and time again. In celebration of Sunday’s finale, we’ve rounded up some of our favorites from this category. We hope you’ll agree that they deserve a round of applause — and that you’ll add some of your personal favorites in the comments.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

At 5’2″ she’s proven herself to be a paradigm of “small but mighty.”

Career highlights: Dominating the ’90s, breaking the “Seinfeld Curse” with The New Adventures of Old Christine and now Veep

Extra versatility points: Playing Maggie Lizer, mother of Michael Bluth’s fake baby on Arrested Development. Louis-Dreyfus is also a criminally underrated choreographer — in a 2007 interview on Inside the Actors Studio she took full responsibility for the famous Elaine dance.

How could you forget Candace Bergen?!

Great list. But Sorkin had nothing to do with Spin City.

So Louis CK made a studio-audience sitcom for HBO called Louie way back when for a single season, which is more an experiment in that kind of tv-making. It's FANTASTIC, and Pamela Adlon plays his wife in that show. I highly recommend it for everyone who loves CK's oeuvre, and especially for those who really wanted these two to hook up on his current FX show.

I agree about Janine Garofalo. Very versatile and underrated in dramatic roles. Also, she got her start on the Larry Sanders Show.

How about Laurie Metcalf? She has proven to be one of the most versatile, talented actresses and continues to have a great career.

Howzabout Janeane Garafolo? From her way too brief stint on SNL to her key appearances in shows like 24 and The West Wing, Janeane always ALWAYS brings it, brings it smart, brings it funny and brings it hot.

Don't forget that Maya Rudolph was a member of The Rentals before she left for SNL. Musical talent she got from her mother.

Speaking of United States of Tara, Brie Larson could have made this list as well. She was also awesome in The League. So many great actresses on this list, but I have to admit I've had a crush on Katey Sagal for 25 years.

Ooh I must agree with Toni Collette and Aisha Tyler. I love Alison Brie but I'd switch out one of them for her. Other than that, great list! Kudos on Megan Mullaly, always loved her.

All great choices! I'd add Aisha Tyler as well. She's got The Talk, Archer and her hilarious podcast to boot.

No love for Toni Collette? She shows more versatility on one show (United States of Tara) than many actors do in their careers.

Here Here Nick! I just finshed re-watching the series with my girlfriend, who had only seen a couple of episodes when it was on-air and now she loves it too! As much as the series finale left me disappointed, i cannot deny how great it is/was

GREAT list! I might have added Mary Tyler Moore, Jane Krakowski, and Bea Arthur. And yes, Nick's right: "Lost" fans do still exist, despite the ending. I, too, spent endless hours watching and discussing the show ...

Of course Lost fans still exist! Despite how unfulfilling the series finale was (to me at least) that is/was still one of the greatest series to ever grace television! I spent/wasted hours upon hours upon hours of my life rabidly watching and discussing the beauty that was: Lost!
