Extremely Silly Photos of Extremely Serious Artists

You might think visual artists have it easy — hanging out with models and making pretty pictures — but after a long day of churning out portraits (at the Factory, perhaps) or patiently mixing colors, every serious artist needs to cut loose and let his silly side shine. After all, writers can’t have all the fun, can they? In fact, from what we can tell, artists come up with some of the strangest and funniest ways to play, and we’ve collected a few snaps of their most ridiculous escapades, both candid and posed, here. Click through to check out our gallery of very silly photos of very serious (or at least seriously acclaimed) visual artists, and when you’re through, you just might consider putting aside your work for the afternoon and going out to play.

So when Henri had diarrhea, they called him Too Loose Lautrec?

I was a Factory Slave in NYC in 1969-1970, and swept up and pitched in projects for Andy and cleaned Calder's Studio, as well as ate daily, while listening to LOU REED & VELVET UNDERGROUND LIVE at The Factory while attending NYU lectures, eating cheesecake and caviar for lunch with mimosa's. Silly is a very important behaviour. You often hear of silliness at the most serious times, for example at key moments between politicians negotiating globally important matters. Silliness is a great stress relief. Some great photos here, really enjoyed them.

Too bad there aren't any serious women artists, thus, no silly pictures of them.

Funny are these silly? They're serious. I'm guessing you haven't seen many photos of artists. Quite a few take goofiness very seriously.

Why is Karl Lagerfeld included? The funniest was the Lucien Freud.

I wouldn't call Dali an extremely serious artist. He may have painted serious subjects, be he was a playful person.

could have done without numero 14!

This is the best set of pics of artists EVER. This is needed to give hope to the zany but doubtful. Toulousse-Lautrec is far and away the best. Love it! Well done.

The gravity-defying industrial lamp and gravity-obeying ristra add yet another odd touch.

These days he'd frame it or stick it in tank of formailn and make a motza.
