Surprisingly Fabulous Russian Army Fashions of the 1890s

You can fight, soldier man, but can you fight in a foot tall fur hat and a snappy outfit strung with tassels? Or a winged golden helmet and some casually draped suspenders? This 1892 photo album from Bibliothèque Nationale rustled up by the Rio Wang blog is fascinating. Who knew that future Czar Nicolas II was such a fox? With the Revolution still deep in the future, the Russian Empire army was undergoing a large-scale modernization, giving plenty excuses to pose in neat rows with their horses and fancy cannons. And, of course, those uniforms! See a few of our favorites in our gallery.

Tanya, my great-great grandfather was a Kabardian who served as an officer in the Russian army as well. Great photos of a bygone era.

Not a surprise to me! The Russian empire actually had some really tremendous clothing, from upper classes and military to peasant dress. Amazing fabrics and patterns. Hussars were strapping. Even photos of my great grandfather in uniform are pretty impressive and he's from a teeny tiny village in the Caucasus mountains.

Not surprising. Military dress has always gone for awe-inspiring splendiferousness. 19th c. Russians and Prussians tended toward excess.

I'm wearing Number 9 to my next staff meeting. Number 13 is for the dinner party afterwords. In fact, if Numbers 9 and 13 fought for the honor of most excellent I believe there would be a draw.
