Now thanks to a post over on StockLogos, we’ve gotten an interesting glimpse at the original (and much less recognizable) logos of some of the world’s biggest companies, juxtaposed with the visuals that we associate these brands with today. From an Apple logo featuring a drawing of Isaac Newton perched under an apple tree to a McDonald’s logo with nary a golden arch in sight, click through for a slideshow of some the most surprising makeovers that we discovered.

SHOCKING. RIVETING. UNBELIEVABLE.

I've always thought the Robert Crumbishness of the original Apple logo was pretty cool and it is says a lot about a company that is explicitly thinking about revolutionary ideas before revolutionary technology. Besides, (practicality aside) is that windswept ribbon really so far from the current reflective, faux-platinum, soft-3D apple?

The genesis of the Appple logo is one which has always fascinated me. See this post in "curiosity": http://richardlittledale.me.uk/2011/08/20/does-god-do-mixed-blessings/

wasn't the orginal Starbucks logo truly 'shocking', at least to some, which prompted the change?

How can a goddess be a 'he'?

You should have reminded people that it was the Eastman Kodak Company for a long time until they started going by just Kodak. And I agree that shocking is a little misplaced here. When they used to say that Proctor & Gamble's logo was really a sign of devil worship shocking might have applied, but not anywhere here.

I think I missed seeing anything remotely "shocking"... the Canon logo was quite cool though.

@jd "My fifth grade teacher taught us how to design logos and he said that you should keep it simple and use contrasting colors." And that's precisely why your teacher was a teacher and not a Madison Ave exec.

The original Shell logo looks like a poorly rendered giant turd. Kinda perfect, if you ask me.

several of these would make great t-shirts. I can totally see photo nerds rocking the original Kodak logo. And that Apple logo is just so insanely opposed to everything the current Apple aesthetic represents that its kinda perfect.

Yup, your'e much too easily shocked. That Kodak one is glorious, I'd have kept it. Maybe that's what went wrong.

@Grant, @subwayduck. Groan.... you guys must be a BLAST at parties..

"Shocking." You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.

I've seen a fair number of these on this site before. Shocking.

Over use of word 'shocked.' Mildly interesting in a sort of cultural artifact detached way.

In the first Nintendo logo, are we sure that those kanji characters don't spell "Marlboro"?

I was expecting IBM to be on the list: http://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/exhibits/logo/logo_5.html (not to count the logos of its previous incarnations which didn't have the words that spell IBM in the name).
