Daily Dose Pick: A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge
9:07 am Monday Aug 10, 2009 by Chelsea Bauch

Josh Neufeld’s graphic novel A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge combines anthropological study with innovative nonfiction storytelling.

First published as a serialized webcomic in SMITH magazine, Neufeld’s story portrays the aftermath of the devastation in Louisiana through interviews with real survivors, accounts taken from print media, and his own experiences as a Red Cross volunteer following the storm.

The published edition features additional stories and art, as well as editorial revisions to the original series. What emerges is a haunting depiction of one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in recent American history, and a raw portrait of the people who survived to tell the tale.

Read the original webcomic, check out the Wall Street Journal’s review of the publication, listen to NPR’s interview with Neufeld, explore the author’s website, and buy the book.

I am confused – "graphic novel" and "innovative nonfiction story telling" are both descriptor phrases for this literary work. Are some of the tales fiction and some not?
