Berlin-based photographer Benedikt Partenheimer takes what might seem like the opposite of conventional portraits. In his ongoing series Turnaround, which we first spotted over at iGNANT, Partenheimer photographs his subjects from behind, allowing the viewer to see what not only the photographer, but also the subject is seeing, playing with the boundaries between internal and external expression and the expectations of portraiture. Something about the turned away body opens up the photographs to include the space around the subjects in an unusually vibrant way, at least for photographs like these, which might, in another life, have been tourist shots or simple photos.
