Vintage Photographs From Inside 10 Famous Libraries

It’s no secret that we’re fans of beautiful libraries here, but it’s not only gorgeous architecture and shiny mahogany work benches that excite us. Inspired by a wonderful collection of vintage photographs of the New York Public Library’s stacks that we spotted over at Retronaut, we decided to put together a mini collection of vintage photographs from inside famous libraries both at home and abroad. Often more subdued than modern libraries, they seem to hum with wisdom through that black and white film — and we bet the old-book smell is just to die for. Page through to check them out, and if you feel inspired to go visit a real life library after you do, well that’s just icing on the cake.

Whether New York or Brooklyn or Boston - couldn't you have indicated which branch? Even 50 years ago, the NYPL had several very large collections - 42nd Street, Donnell, 5th Avenue. I'd assume that the Brooklyn one in the photo is the main branch at Grand Army Plaza. Boston - I've no clue.

Gorgeous photos that definitely make me want to go and browse some 'real' bookshelves. Black and white or sepia imagery is especially evocative. Sad to think how many literary treasures were destroyed in the wars, in all countries...

I love all the pictures of the library, but couldn't you have gotten pics to show what they look like now? I mean the one's that are still here? Please continue your posting on books and libraries! Don't get me wrong, e-books are fine, but there's nothing like the feel of a good book as you turn the page to the next adventure!!!

Incidentally, that's not London Library - it's a picture of the library at Holland House in Kensington in London. It wasn't open to the public - just a "stately home" library - and the bombing was the first and last opportunity that they public would have to browse its shelves. The House was too badly damaged to be restored, and there are now public gardens on the site. A beautiful collection of photographs, thankyou.

Weird to see the Cambridge University Library looking good - it's like a prison for books. Although that bit pretty much looks the same now, and is still quite nice. Most of the stacks are cramped and dingy though. What it lacks in beauty, it makes up for in variety.

Thanks for the list. I have a poster of the "London Library" photograph. Years ago I worked at Labyrinth Books (now called Book Culture) in New York and we had it hanging behind the register/info counter. Every other customer would comment on it. If someone was rude or spoke down to us we would casually divulge the details of the photograph which had the affect of dousing any romantic stories their imaginations could conjure. Anyway, they finally nailed down the rights and a source and had posters made for sale. It looks great in print. I wish this image would do it justice.
