Seth MacFarlane to Host Oscars Despite Screwing Up Emmys

Seth MacFarlane provided one of the funniest moments in last week’s disappointing Emmys telecast — by missing his mark, giving half his speech without a microphone, and then realizing the mistake was bound for YouTube infamy. But apparently the gaffe didn’t hurt his awards-show caché any, because he’s just been announced as the host of the 85th Academy Awards on February 24, 2013. At this point, we’ll take anyone who isn’t Billy Crystal, but we have to wonder: Is this a great choice? Regardless of our feelings about Family Guy, its spin-offs, and MacFarlane’s feature film debut Ted, his stint hosting Saturday Night Live as an on-camera performer wasn’t exactly a revelation. And the older viewers who are the Oscars’ staple audience may not even know who he is, much less recognize him. Let us know whether you think the Academy’s made a bold choice or a colossal misstep in the comments.

I think it's a good choice. I thought he was actually pretty good on SNL. He's got ridiculously handsome teeth, he's (usually) solid in front of a crowd but won't take away from the real stars of the show, and his embrace of musical theater seems right up the Academy Awards' alley.

Family Guy is hilarious, but Seth MacFarlane himself is not particularly an all-round comical genius. American Dad and The Cleveland Show are Family Guy revisited, but worse. Ted was, frankly speaking, just horrible. Pretty cute to see an animated bear and all, but the film's humor was clearly directed at hysterical teenagers.
