Dream Homes Built for Books and the Nerds Who Love Them

Barbie has a dream house, and it seems only fair that book nerds should have one too. When we saw a beautiful, four-story home on Gizmodo that was designed entirely around a giant bookcase, we fell in love. Hard. We feature more photos of the bibliofiend’s fantasy palace after the break, along with other amazing houses that take bookcases to the extreme. The designers of these abodes honored the owners’ love of literature by making each home’s central concept and prominent architectural component a huge, built-in library. Several of these bookcases take over the entire house. Are you swooning yet? Click through our gallery for more.

This “vertical loft” was part of a historical restoration project in Rotterdam, designed by Dutch architectural firm, Shift. A three-story bookcase replaced one of the main structural walls in the home, stretching to every floor. The adjacent staircase provides easy access to the large collection. It’s a good thing we don’t live here, since we’d probably never leave the house.

This giant bookshelf should be the dream of every bookworm. With a 4 stories bookshelf, we will never have to give up another book again. I think the ladder for shelf access is very important as this could be the only way to the books, safety should be considered on these ladders. One can consider putting on non-slip coatings to reduce the risk of accidents.

It would be a Pueblo kiva of knowledge.. A kiva is a sacred space used by Pueblo Indians such as the Hopi, not the Dine.

Dizzy! Don't like! NO SPIRAL or dizzying bookcases! EVER!

If you enjoy these photos, go to The BookCase Project, my Facebook page which posts photos of bookcases as well as the latest articles on how technology is having an impact on printed books, bookshops, publishing houses, and public libraries.

A refined home must have a piano and a bookshelf!

When I was in Boston for my brother's wedding, I took my niece to visit John Adams' home. We were walking around the home where President retired (Peacefield) and noticed a rather large non-descript building next to the main house. When we opened the door and walked in I stood there in shock. Inside was a beautiful two-story library with wooden paneling, comfortable chairs and a work table. Ever since it has been a personal dream to find a small house and build myself a personal library like John Adams. I have often joked than when I get old, I would open my home as a used book store.

i have never seen a home i desired so much.

Nice places for those who always wanted to live in a library, like me. Fortunately, I can now carry around my library in my pocket. That's even better.

Dude that is like truly amazing. www.Privatise-it.tk

Bella will lose her shit in places like these.

I do love giant built in libraries. However, The Ark is uninspired, dull, and would make a great house look like a college dorm with its unfinished 2*4 stud construction.

Nuclear winter I really can appreciate you now. The book arch is my favorite. Might change my mind in the 4th sweep through this heaven hutch.

@Linda: your grandparents sound awesome!

When I was growing up, my grandparents had their house remodeled to include a floor to ceiling built in bookcase. It was the most, spectacular wonderful thing. So much room for so many books. Some of these designs are stunning, but others look very inaccessible for grabbing a book and more for simply showing off how many books there are.
