Once upon a time, there was a Finnish artist named Susanna Majuri, who created magical and mysterious images by photographing young women underwater, with bears and birds and beasts of burden, falling or flying as if arrested in a single moment of an epic fairy tale. The photographs are at once removed and cold and filled with possibility, the kind of images that have us making up stories to surround them, as some of the best art does. Click through to see some of our favorites from Majuri’s portfolio, and then head here to check out more of her beautiful work, underwater and otherwise.
