Amazing Sculptures of Animals Made Out of Discarded Material

In less skillful hands, Sayaka Ganz’s sculptures could read like a hackneyed environmentalist statement. But the artist’s creations, which combine hundreds of disparate plastic or metal parts into lifelike depictions of animals in motion, instead transfix the viewer with their creation of coherent shapes from objects Ganz collects in thrift stores. According to her website (where you can see more of her work), she painstakingly models her animals using steel wire before welding together anything from discarded utensils to metal scrap parts. Preoccupied with “reclamation and regeneration,” Ganz aims to make sense of the world around her by using her willpower to transform chaotic piles of trash into gorgeous works of art.
