Daily Dose Pick: Daniel Johnston

3

Indie-music cult figure and recent art-world discovery Daniel Johnston is a complex outsider artist, haunted by lost loves and fears of Satan.

Often described as a genius, Johnston has a manic-depressive history that has landed him spots on MTV and college radio, in gallery exhibitions and the Whitney Biennial, yet most repeatedly in mental institutions. The artist was the subject of a 2006 documentary, and more recently, a Rizzoli monograph and an offbeat new iPhone app.

Visit Johnston’s website, watch the documentary trailer, check out the tribute game for the iPhone and iPod Touch, read his interview with Harvey Pekar, buy the Rizzoli monograph, and catch an upcoming performance.

I loved the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johston and reviewed it for Rabble Radio. I've been following DJ for a while now with great interest. Is he a bona fide artist or a car accident? There's no doubt that he's coming back more and more I see him popping up. I think his lyrics are brilliant, but I'm not sure about the actual music. Cartoons are terrif. Any other thoughts out there? Would you pay HUGE money for one of his drawings? H

I dont know if I would pay big money. I guess if I knew him personally and followed his work. I just rented the devil and daniel johnson. I'm excited to see it. I discovered him by looking for artist bio's on netflix and ran into his movie. Never heard of him before that…

C'mon, people, the cartoons are funny as heck but this kid can barely draw. The work is like the Godzilla doodles I used to scratch out in the sixth grade cafeteria. When is this culture going to start recognizing serious artists who can execute a coherent idea in a medium they've actually mastered?
