Powerful Photos of NYC Nannies and the Children They Look After

Nannies are one of those quintessential rich-person expenses — no one who earns less than a gazillion dollars a year would think of paying someone else to raise their children for them, but hey, nannies are nevertheless a common sight in NYC. It will surprise precisely no one to note that there’s a gaping chasm between the lives of nannies and those of the people who employ them; nannies are often immigrants and/or people of color, earn minimum wage, and have no health care. Photographer Ellen Jacob has explored this chasm with a series of photos (which we first spotted at The Culture), and they’re powerful images, cataloging and illustrating the stark differences between NYC nannies and the children they look after.
