Unnerving Self-Portraits of an Artist Falling

Share:

Kerry Skarbakka’s nail-biting photo series The Struggle to Right Oneself captures the artist precisely at the moment of falling or losing control of his body. Skarbakka’s images find inspiration from Martin Heidegger’s theory on human existence as a state of perpetual falling. The domestic shots of the artist slipping in the tub or falling off a ladder are frighteningly relatable scenarios, but photos of Skarbakka tumbling from trees and tripping off bridges intensifies the terror and unpredictability. Indeed, the artist uses special rigs to stage the scenes. Still, as Beautiful Decay points out, the final results are unnerving and totally convincing.
