Vintage Travel Posters vs. Today’s Versions
11:53 am Monday Nov 9, 2009 by Caroline Stanley

Our design-minded friends at Grain Edit have thoughtfully rounded up a “handful of travel related posters from 1950s -1970s for all the desk jockeys that are itching to get out of town.”

They are simply stunning. Check out five of our favorites after the jump, along with some modern day counterparts we dredged up. Let us know if you feel more inspired by the old-school versions to update your passport. We certainly did.

Vintage wins, by a nautical mile.

crying shame!

I’ve just spent all day at the World Travel Market in London where almost every tourist board in the world has a stand. Didn’t see a single standout poster/display all day. The travel industry has such an incredible design heritage and now everything is just so dull – unimaginative messages and bland, generic photography. What went wrong?! Time for a quiet revolution…

Vintage, all the way. Now I am nostalgic for the times before I was born again, thanks! ;-/

is there anywhere to get these vintage posters?!

Awesome vintage posters. What happened?

Kurt • November 9th, 2009 at 4:50 pm

What Happened? Design became a business. I’m sure a large committee of non-creatives debated just how many messages they could ‘fit’ into the space.

What happened? A general discomfort with abstraction. It’s really not an issue of new/vintage, but one of an obsession with “reality.” Our imaginations, both collective and individual, are far more powerful than stock photography and wordy copy.

Picture This Gallery in Hong Kong has an exhibition opening on Thursday (12th) entitled “Travel Show”. Looks like they’re gonna have these kind of vintage posters. Wonder if I’ll be able to afford any? Hmmm…
