After Ryan Murphy held an hour-long panel at Comic-Con for both AHS and his new Fox horror-comedy, Scream Queens, the network has released a series of videos individually introducing us to the uppity characters played by Emma Roberts, Ariana Grande, Billie Lourd and Abigail Breslin — all known as “the Chanels.”
The domineering ring leader, Chanel Oberlin — aka Chanel No. 1 — is played by Roberts, who admits Oberlin’s the farthest thing from “warm and fuzzy;” in fact, she’s likely to remind you of Roberts’ AHS: Coven character, Madison Montgomery (though, luckily her housemates here, Oberlin doesn’t seem to be telekinetic).
And, according to Ryan Murphy, Ariana Grande is well-suited for her role as a “messed-up horror, Gothic, crazy, weird stuff”-obsessed girl, though Grande described the character as “the safest, least daring one of the group.”
Breslin, meanwhile is very much playing against type, saying of her Chanel (#5):
She’s smart and cunning and sociopathic and a little bit insane, and it’s exactly what I hoped it would be. I’ve never played a mean girl before… It’s my goal to just be evil and be a mean girl and it’s just been so exciting… It’s such a dream job for me.
There are five Chanels in total, but only four videos were released, leaving Chanel No. 4 a mystery. Viewers will have to wait until September 22, 2015 for the full reveal of the not-so-sweet clique.
