Watch: Julianne Moore and Ellen Page Fight for Equal Rights in First ‘Freeheld’ Trailer

Remember back in 1998, when Robin Williams finally won his Oscar for Good Will Hunting, and then his next several movies (What Dreams May Come, Patch Adams, Jakob the Liar, Bicentennial Man) all looked a bit too much like he was trying to win another? Well, I’m not certain this analogy is entirely compatible to Julianne Moore—for starters, Good Will Hunting is a far better film than Still Alice —but the trailer is out for Moore’s latest film, Freeheld, and she’s playing a gay cop who’s dying of cancer, so you do the math.

That skepticism aside, Freeheld looks somewhat promising. The stellar cast boasts, in addition to Moore, Ellen Page, Michael Shannon, Josh Charles, and Moore’s Crazy, Stupid, Love co-star Steve Carell; it’s based on a true story about the important issue of benefits for domestic partners; it’s penned by Ron Nyswaner, who wrote Philadelphia, and director Peter Sollett helmed the charming Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist and the downright excellent Raising Victor Vargas.

Freeheld is out October 5.
