Capping off a year that already includes two documentaries and an hourlong HBO special, comedian Tig Notaro has also received a pilot order from Amazon, writes Lesley Goldberg of The Hollywood Reporter. Based on Notaro’s experiences with, in rapid succession, abdominal disease, her mother’s death, a breakup, and cancer, the pilot will be co-written with Diablo Cody of Juno and Jennifer’s Body and executive produced, alongside Notaro and Cody, by Louis CK, who also distributed Notaro’s landmark 2012 special Live.
The pilot, starring Notaro, will now take part in Amazon streaming’s “pilot season,” in which the online commerce behemoth (theoretically) relies on user feedback to help select what continues on to series. In the case of more prestigious offerings like Jill Soloway’s Transparent, however, Amazon is often influenced by critical as well as popular opinion. Given the cult appeal of Notaro and Cody as well as the straight-up mass appeal of Louis CK, this pilot may prove to be just such a venture for the streaming service.
Here’s the full description, per The Hollywood Reporter: “Tig Notaro has just recovered from an abdominal disease that has left her gaunt, wasted, exhausted and pretty much stripped of everything except her finely honed sense of the absurd. Abruptly summoned home to Pass Christian, Miss., to take her ailing mother off life support, Tig finds herself dealing with her clingy girlfriend, her dysfunctional Gulf Coast family and the loss of the one person who held everything together.”
