Fox Announces ‘Prison Break’ Sequel, Lee Daniels’ Next Project

LOS ANGELES: The biggest news out of TCA this morning — besides The X-Files clip we were treated to — was the official announcement of a Prison Break series and details on Lee Daniels’ follow-up to Empire.

As of now, Prison Break is still in development but will probably go straight to series. It’s been described as a “bit of a sequel” and picks up the characters several years after we last left them after Season 4. The straight-to-video movie (Prison Break: The Final Break) won’t be completely ignored but will be kind of ignored because — spoiler alert, I guess — Michael died. Rather, it will have a “logical and believable explanation to why the characters are alive and still moving around the world” which I’m looking forward to hearing and laughing at. Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell will both reprise their roles.

Empire’s Lee Daniels’ new project is a soap opera titled Star and will center on three women who are all in a singing group. The series takes place in Atlanta and, like Empire, exists during the “modern-day music business” meaning it’s possible there will be a crossover episode with Empire. According to Dana Walden, Star “features a lot of Lee’s own DNA and represents a new perspective: that of the artist.”
