10 Best TV Shows of the Decade as Minimalist Art
9:31 am Tuesday Dec 1, 2009 by Caroline Stanley

Our friends at Buzzfeed pointed us to this awesome series of minimalist tributes to popular TV shows by graphic designer Albert Exergian. While his work pays homage to everyone from Charlie’s Angels to Better Off Ted, we’ve decided to use this as an opportunity to countdown the ten best shows of the past decade — with their accompanying posters as visual aids, naturally.

Click through for the rainbow-colored eye candy and let us know which poster is your favorite.

1. The Sopranos (HBO, 1999-2007)

The red-checkered tablecloth is only missing the blood splatters from the latest hit!

the wire one is the best one. so simple and bold. but i am a battlestar geek and would BUY that poster.

I laughed out loud at how right on the Sopranos one is. (I’m a huge Sop. fan) but some of the others were lost on me cause I don’t watch them. They got a little predictable.

where’s arrested development? scrubs? really?

Anthony • December 1st, 2009 at 4:10 pm

The Wire poster is best.

wow. 7/10 of these are my absolute favorite shows (or were at some point this decade). right on!! the best looking posters are the ones for the wire and 6 feet under. the weeds one is pretty funny. and may i just say, i CANNOT WAIT for the lost finale this spring. best show ever (besides the wire).

I don’t get it.

Weeds is the best one. I don’t get the Mad Men one.

These are wonderful. I did a similar exercise recently where I made minimal posters for movies that were on my list to see. I made them simply knowing the titles and little about the films. You can view them here if you’d like.

The Scrubs one is best!! Look at how the the four main characters are id’ed by color and arranged; See how the colors vibrate off each other? Men and women across from each other, but together and talking… Pink and green vibrating off each other sets up the energy of the whole group, very elegant color theory applied.

The others are clever symbols, but don’t put the protagonists and their confusion on the page like the Scrubs poster!

@grit: The Mad Men graphic is a rocks glass of whiskey.

And you can check out many, many more of Ergian’s television posters here: http://exergian.tumblr.com/.

Personally I’ve never liked it, but it has stuck around. And people who love it, LOVE IT.

Meh, I think True Blood is a guilty pleasure at best, not top 10 material (especially since you’re only basing this off of two seasons worth of material), and Scrubs stopped being funny after season 4.

I think Deadwood, Rome, Arrested Development, Breaking Bad, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Rescue Me, Extras, Futurama, The Office, The Venture Bros, or The Boondocks all deserve a place on the list over those shows. Everything else I agree with, though.
