Zachary Quinto, Idris Elba and Other ‘Star Trek Beyond’ Cast Members Pay Homage to Leonard Nimoy

The Star Trek: To Go Boldly campaign through Omaze is a large charity effort that will see money going to nine cast-member-selected causes. With the campaign ending soon — on September 1st — the cast has released a video tribute to Leonard Nimoy to support his wife, Susan Nimoy’s, nomination of a charity in his name. Using the promise of a chance to be in the next Star Trek film to raise funds to go towards the assorted charities, Zachary Qunito leads a behind-the-scenes explanation of both the Susan Nimoy-selected charity, and of Leonard Nimoy’s legacy.

Qunito was naturally the perfect cast member to narrate the clip, as he plays a younger version of Mr. Spock, the role that made Nimoy famous, in the new Star Trek franchise. Of Nimoy, he said, “It was an honor and a privilege to know him and to call him a friend. Leonard’s love for the human spirit shone through everything he did.” The organization Nimoy’s wife selected on his behalf is the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, a trailblazer in the search for cures for childhood cancer and other illnesses.

The other eight participating cast members — Idris Elba (who chose to donate to Helping Homes), John Cho (Koreatown Youth & Community Center), Simon Pegg (Time is Precious), Chris Pine (Make-a-Wish), Zachary Quinto (Direct Relief International), Zoë Saldana (Brave Beginnings), Karl Urban (KidsCan), and Anton Yelchin (Camp Sunshine) — all also appear in the video, raising their hands in a Vulcan Salute.

The next film in the franchise, Star Trek Beyond, will be released July 8, 2016. /Film has more details on the campaign. Donate here.
