Carly Rae Jepsen Performs in a Seedy Bar in “Your Type” Video

“There was once a girl—no, a young woman. But not just any young woman, no, no, this one was special. On the outside, she might even have seemed less ordinary, but never judge a book by its cover, and certainly not this one because this is a Cinderella story.”

The campy (and somewhat creepy?) monologue that opens Carly Rae Jepsen’s music video for “Your Type”—the third single from her acclaimed third LP, E•MO•TION— sets the tone for its concept; fresh off a bus, Jepsen stumbles into a seedy bar to freshen up in preparation for her performance. As she begins meekly performing in front of the lethargic and indifferent audience at the bar, the audience viewing the music video sees a contrasting projection of her imagination—a glammed-up version of herself performing in front of a jovial and enthusiastic crowd. The juxtaposition between reality and fantasy overlaps with the song’s theme of unrequited love.
