John Oliver Offers an Alternative to Moments of Silence for Paris

Last night on Last Week Tonight, John Oliver opened with a few words about the Paris attacks — most of them profane. Responding a day and a half after news broke of the multiple attacks that killed 129 people, and of ISIS’s claimed involvement — immediately following the deadliest bombing Beirut had seen since the Lebanese Civil War, for which ISIS also claimed responsibility — Oliver exercised his premium cable rights to swear excessively and cathartically.

“It’s hardly been 48 hours [since the Paris attacks], and much is still unknown,” he began. “But there are a few things we can say for certain, and this is when it actually helps to be on HBO, where those things can be said without restraint. Because after the many necessary and appropriate moments of silence, I’d like to offer you a moment of premium cable profanity.”
