Watch Michael C. Hall Perform David Bowie’s “Lazarus” on ‘Colbert’

Yesterday, David Bowie released “Lazarus,” the second single from his upcoming album, (Blackstar). It’s also the only song from the album that appears in his Off Broadway musical Lazarus, which stars Michael C. Hall. Last night, on The Late Show, Hall appeared as David Bowie to perform the track alongside the Lazarus cast.

The appearance was prefaced by a weirdo video clip that explained that Hall was just another alter-ego of the chameleonic musician. The performance is impressive, until you remember that Hall is a veteran singer-performer who had a short run as Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch in 2014-15. So, it makes perfect sense that he’s been cast as a kind of extraterrestrial rockstar. Anyway, he really sells it, and it’s nice to see that the track holds up in a live setting, even if it has been pared down by two minutes.

Watch the clip below, and catch Lazarus at the New York Theater Workshop thru January 20. David Bowie’s will be released January 8.
