Beyoncé’s Path to an EGOT: HBO Will Submit ‘Lemonade’ for an Emmy

For years, there has been gossip brewing about Beyoncé’s strong desire to join Whoopi Goldberg, Mel Brooks, and Mike Nichols as a holder of an EGOT (an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony). Most of these rumors involve the fact that Beyoncé has hired teams of people to write things under her own name, and it’s all very nebulous, etc. But those are just rumors! Now we have facts to prove that Beyoncé is hungry for, at least, an Emmy: HBO has announced that it will submit Lemonade for an award in the “variety special” category.

Variety reports that HBO is, in fact, submitting it to the Emmys, but also that it’s trying to work out how to parse the special’s many collaborators — a list that includes seven directors, among others. Last year, the award for variety special went to the Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special, so the bar for these things does not seem to be set too high.

Beyoncé has two previous Emmy nominations to her name, though she’s yet to receive an Oscar or a Tony nod. The fact that she wasn’t nominated for her work in Austin Powers in Goldmember is really just a travesty, though. Her role there even predicted the future existence of her fanbase being called the Beyhive. Seriously, watch the clip below. Very prescient.
