Daily Dose Pick: R. Crumb’s Illustrated Book of Genesis

Underground comix icon Robert Crumb paints the Bible in a new light with his illustrated version of the entire book of Genesis.

Sex, scandal, and subtle satire abound, but with each carefully rendered detail — and the inclusion of every word from the five opening chapters — Crumb has given a new frame to one of the most widely known stories in history. Sure, he’s been under fire since the book’s release, but when has Crumb not been under fire for something or other?

Explore Crumb’s website, read Vanity Fair‘s interview with the artist, witness his personal take on the history of women, and buy the book.

It is strange the way people react in life to things.Without knowing the capabilities of another they give their opinions.Sad indeed!Art is not about art school.Artists are born not made. There is no Zeitgeist,or the "Mona Lisa" wouldn't be the worlds most precious painting.Just because some barnyard bufoon has been a suave businessman and sold a whole lot of gobbledegook globally to the masses short on IQ,doesn't neccessarily put him on a pedestal beside some God in Valhalla. But this is not reality. The reality is with Zealots who brought the twin towers down.Men and woman who will come across the globe, just to get even with you,and beleive me I know quite a few of them.....PRINCEFREAKASSO

Sorry Lizzy if I had you in a tizzy, but all my life as a mystic and clairvoyant,my style has left many dizzy.Crumbs' an illustrator not a contemporay artist,he's like all other comic book illustrators,so don't get so frigid with these small trivialities. In any case very few are competent on the Bible to say nice things. As I'm an initiated white magician also I can look right into the inebriated mind's of my critics too.So have a great "CHRISTMAS" and a greater "NEW YEAR"too.....PRINCEFREAKASSO

'Scuse me, Princefreakasso, but are you a world renowned artist who gets this kind of coverage?

I get the play on Picasso; probably the only interesting (NOT) thing your art student self has come up with.

Just because you're too young and illiterate of religion and history to get this work doesn't mean it doesn't have merit. Get your tiny head out of the aspirational clouds of Art History and look at reality; Crumb has sold prolifically all his life meaning he resonates with many people. And Lowbrow is in! But I guess your art school is too far off the zeitgeist to know that... "stoop to think in a way porcine"? Whoever you stole that from thought it was clever too, but the fact is that people are too often pigs and Crumb observes reality in a way you completely miss.

Hence his fame and your lack of new works on Flavorpill. Or anywhere.

Eve's in the know prefer something a little more fashionable.

Crumb's way of thinking is primitive. He illustrates how he feels about the text and leaves out rational thinking...an ability God gave the human mind.

Crumb's ability to illustrate is not in question here. He is a talented illustrator. My commented was on the interview and the way he illustrated the book. He simply illustrated his opinion. Thanks ava for allowing me to clarify.

How can one accuse Crumb of personal bias when he has preserved the actual text and drawn cartoons that illustrate the text (albeit with graphic reality we often turn aside from in the Bible)? I think it is a brilliant effort.

Crumb's! A good illustrator, but a crummy hallucinator. His bankruptcy for creative thought is at it's zenith here.Blessed with a good depiction of form and line, why stoop to think in a way porcine?....Princefreakasso

There is no accusation. Simply commenting to his own words on how he feels toward the book he illustrated. Taking his illustrations literally is what's in question and not the fact that he used the actual text. In which anyone can respect. From an artist perspective I can say great effort.

Oh, and Merry Christmas.

do we really need more religious hocus pocus & propaganda? oh, & btw merry xmas.
