In her first show of the year, St. Vincent performed a benefit concert for her drummer’s son, Jasper Johnson — and sang the whole time while wearing a purple toilet costume. The concert, held at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC, also featured special guests Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Father John Misty, Elysian Fields, Joan As Police Woman, and others. (Matt Johnson, Jasper’s dad, has drummed for the Wainrights, as well as Elysian Fields, which explains their presence.) St. Vincent performed her classic “Bring Me Your Loves,” “Marry Me,” and a new song, which is exciting, given the fact that we haven’t heard any news of fresh material from Annie Clark in sometime. (It’s also exciting that toilets might play into a big part of the album’s aesthetic.)
The getup does not appear to be related to Johnson, who is recovering from a severe seizure, nor any of the songs she performed. Maybe it’s art, who knows: nothing like flushing PR money down the toilet.
