A federal judge has overturned the conviction of Brendan Dassey for the murder of photographer Theresa Halbach in 2005. Dassey is one half of the subjects in Netflix’s popular documentary series Making a Murderer. His uncle, Steven Avery, was also convicted for Halbach’s murder, and is currently incarcerated and appealing his conviction. Dassey, who has already served 11 years of his 41-year sentence, was only 16 at the time of the murder. The documentary makes a strong case for how Dassey’s constitutional rights were violated, especially considering his learning disability. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the new ruling “gives prosecutors 90 days to decide whether to retry Dassey, although an appeal could extend the proceedings.”
