Evocative Portraits of Russian Teens in the ’90s

Share:

French photographer Lise Sarfati made several visits to Russia during the 1990s. The characters in her new foreign surroundings became the focus of her camera — namely teenage runaways in “re-education” camps, transgender youth, and other young faces. She captured her subjects inside crumbling buildings, factories straight out of a horror movie, and other strange environments. The juxtaposition of decay and transformation has a visual allure that’s hard to look away from. See more of Sarfati’s photos, which we first spotted on Juxtapoz, in our gallery. Purchase Sarfati’s monograph Acta Est over here.
