Video of the Day: Spike Lee Directs Michael Jackson’s “This Is It”

10

Spike Lee released his official video for Michael Jackson’s posthumous single, “This Is It” over the Christmas holiday. It’s a montage of iconic images of the King of Pop, footage shot in his hometown of Gary, Indiana, and at fan tributes following his death on June 25 (including the Brooklyn street party that Lee through in his honor), and rare clips from live performances. It’s touching, no doubt, but we find ourselves feeling seriously underwhelmed. This is Jackson’s final music video. While we weren’t expecting controversy, we’re surprised that Lee didn’t do something a tad more provocative. Take a peek after the jump and let us know what you think.

cheesefest. seriously?

Well, firstly, this isn’t really “Michael Jackson’s final video.” Jackson himself would have had to make that. And what Lee has done here–pridefully compile MJ images–is something we’re bound to see for years to come, as Sony Music and the Jackson estate will certainly create videos for previously unreleased Jackson music that is bound to be released for years to come. But if this seems a bit uninspired, then consider the song itself, an absolutely pathetic representation of one of pop’s greatest acts of all time, put out there by no less than Jackson’s own estate. That is the real shame.

HOT!!!

Michael was a great artist and performer who, despite personal problems, touched all of us for a long time. This video looks like someone made it in a few minutes for youtube with imovie 1 or some old laptop, and is not even close to being worthy of his last video. Are we really sure someone with Mr. Lee’s resources could turn in such a weak piece of work? If he was going for the personal fan look, it feels more than a bit ironic than intimate, and by this standard, everyone should be able to release their own version. We don’t need to even know who made this version anymore than any other fan of Michael.

Making this the official release seems a shame and has little to do with how I’d like to remember him or this song. Someone’s out of touch. Too bad.

It certainly is not Spike’s most inspired work, and is reminiscent of the cheesy and sudden remake of Elton John’s Candle in the Wind for Princess Di when she passed.

Spike Lee =Great Artist

Michael Jackson =Great Artist

Elton John another great artist, so what is with all this cheese??

For Heaven’s sake people, put a little LOVE and passion into it!!!

Having been born around the same era as Michael Jackson, sort grew up on the Jackson 5, then later on MJ when he went single. I agree with both the post of vicblk and Stan western above.

really this vid is perfunctory at best, and really an insult to the talent both of Spike Less, and shallow memory when one thinks about what could have been done.

Then, to have the “40acres” rolling across it, sheeesh!

Interesting visuals, but yeah, kind of underwhelming. I blame the song, though.

Absolutely rubbish, it looks like something a student on a video editing course would knock up for an assignment, I can’t believe Spike would put his name to it, nevermind on it!

agreed. i think i could have done this on imovie.

yeah, seriously. what is this? it’s things like this that make it even more evident and clear what a great talent we have lost. sadly, no on can even do his passing justice, no great final video, no large scale global final tribute. :( miss you michael.
