Mark Laita juxtaposes photographic portraits of Americans from all walks of life to amusingly challenge the concept of being created equal.
Photographing archetypes across 48 states during an eight-year period, Laita used the same formal techniques to capture all of his subjects. The commercial photographer-turned-fine-artist then paired the images — contrasting Catholic nuns with prostitutes, and a chain gang with a cheerleader squad — to create a 21st-century view of America’s mythical melting pot.
