Childish Gambino Confirms His Upcoming Album’s December Release Date, Shares Album Art and First Track

Donald Glover’s series Atlanta has been considered by many to be one the most relevant and unique series on television, for its deft tonal fluidity in its approach to the the precarious security of black lives in a country that so often seems intent on perpetuating its history of oppressions. As the actor/rapper/writer has risen to new creative heights (and will soon rise to new heights of mega-stardom as Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo-centric Star Wars prequel film), rumors had been spreading that he’d also release a new album this year, the follow-up to 2013’s because the internet.

And as Pitchfork notes, earlier this month, rumors began seeming like more than rumors when the music store FYE’s (yeah, they do still exist, apparently) upcoming schedule of releases appeared on the ‘net, with a December 2 slot for the album, Awaken, My Love!, by a certain Childish Gambino.

Glover confirmed these rumors, it seems, with a tease of the album on Twitter, alongside the album’s art:

Pitchfork also notes that the artwork sneakily appeared on the ninth episode of Atlanta, “Juneteenth.

UPDATE: A press release also was sent confirming the album’s upcoming release, and describing it as an “amalgam of rock, funk, and soul influences.” The first track from the album, “Me and Your Mama,” debuted today on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 world record, where he played it 6 times in a row.
