There are many inexplicable things about the world today, but few more inexplicable that the fact that failed Daily Mirror editor and cultural bad smell Piers Morgan has somehow become something of a “personality” in the USA. So much so, in fact, that he commands the attention of people who a decade ago wouldn’t have given him the time of day — like, for instance, Lady Gaga, who engaged him on Twitter yesterday over a series of comments he made about Madonna’s Billboard Women in Music Speech (wherein she related how she was raped at knifepoint) and Gaga’s interview on the Today show (wherein she related how she suffers from PTSD as a result of being raped.)
Morgan, as he’s wont to do, came wading into a story that doesn’t concern him, waving his “skepticism” like a flaccid wand:
Before we go any further, we should note that neither Madonna nor Gaga are identifying their accused rapists, which makes the whole “accepting claims as fact” issue redundant; no-one is potentially damaged by these claims except (as Morgan so aptly demonstrates) Gaga and Madonna themselves. Of course, Morgan has an answer for that — they’re doing it for attention!
Anyway, because it’s 2016 and we can watch these things play out in real time on Twitter, we can see how Gaga offered to do an interview with Morgan to discuss why women don’t report rapes, and how PTSD can affect a victim.
Take note: Morgan immediately frames the idea as a “debate,” as if either of those issues needed to be debated: women’s reluctance to report rape, and the reasons for this, are well-established facts, as is the relationship between PTSD and rape. But since we’re living in a post-truth world, established evidence is no match for the stubborn doubt of an asinine white man:
And then, because he can’t help himself, he made a joke about the woman who’d just agreed to spend time out of her life to educate him on shit on which he’s too stupid and/or lazy to educate himself:
Wow, good for you, Piers!
Jokes aside, there’s something terribly sad about this: that a woman as prominent and successful as Gaga still feels she has to sit down with a troglodyte like Morgan to “debate” him over his “skepticism.” Still, she’s more than likely to hand him his arse on a plate, so that’s something to look forward to, I guess.
